As we move further into the digital age, technology is becoming increasingly intertwined with every aspect of our lives. From the devices we use to stay connected, to the cars we drive, and the buildings we live and work in, technology is shaping the way we live and interact with the world around us. But what does this mean for the future of sustainability?
Technology as a Saviour
On one hand, technology has the potential to be a powerful tool in the fight for sustainability. Advances in renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, have made it possible for us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and decrease our greenhouse gas emissions.
Electric vehicles and other clean transportation options are reducing the transportation sector's impact on the environment. Smart grid technology and energy storage are making it possible for us to rely more heavily on renewable energy sources and reduce our energy demand. Companies such as Tesla and Enel X are leading the charge in this field, with their cutting-edge battery storage systems and Electric Vehicle offerings. These companies set an example for others in the industry to follow and lead the way towards a greener future.

Technology can also have a negative impact
On the other hand, technology also has a dark side regarding sustainability. The rapid increase in the use of technology, particularly the proliferation of devices such as smartphones and computers, has led to an explosion in demand for raw materials and energy. This, in turn, has led to increased mining, deforestation, and pollution.
The constant upgrading of technology has also led to a culture of disposability, where devices are used for a short period of time before being discarded and replaced, resulting in e-waste, one of the fast-growing waste streams in the world. While companies like Apple and Samsung have been vocal about their efforts to reduce e-waste and use sustainable materials in their products, there is still more to be done to address this issue.

Sustainability solutions and initiatives
So how do we balance these two sides of technology in order to ensure a sustainable future?
One solution is the concept of the circular economy, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them before eventually recovering and regenerating them. This approach not only reduces waste and pollution but also creates economic opportunities by keeping resources in use for longer. Companies like Philips and IKEA have been using circular economy principles in their products and operations, with Philips introducing product-as-a-service and IKEA investing in second-hand furniture marketplaces. This is a solution that not only reduces the negative impact on the environment but also creates a sustainable business model that benefits both the companies and consumers.
Another solution is to address the issue of energy consumption and its impact on the environment. The increasing use of technology has led to a huge increase in energy demand, which is fuelling the extraction of fossil fuels and contributing to climate change. However, there are solutions to this problem as well. By investing in energy-efficient devices and building materials, we can greatly reduce energy consumption. Additionally, by investing in smart grid technology and energy storage, we can greatly reduce energy demand and make it possible to rely more heavily on renewable energy sources. Companies like Siemens, GE and IBM have been developing and implementing these solutions for a greener future.
Below are initiatives conducted by Siemens, GE and IBM
Using technology to have a positive environmental impact in our day-to-day lives
Here are a few examples of applications that have a positive environmental impact:
Ecosia – This is a search engine that plants trees with its advertising revenue
MyFitnessPal – Tracks and monitors your carbon footprint from food consumption and provides tips to reduce it
Too Good To Go – Food waste reduction app that connects local food businesses with consumers to sell surplus food that would otherwise go to waste
ShareTheMeal – Allows users to donate money to feed hungry children in developing countries by simply tapping their smartphones
Ecovadis – Platform that helps companies assess, monitor and improve their environmental, social and ethical performance by evaluating suppliers and partners
Waze – Navigation app that not only helps users avoid traffic, but also includes features that allow users to report on areas of congestion, construction, and accidents, making it easier for other users to find alternate routes and reduce emissions caused by idling in traffic
EcoCaddy – Carbon offsetting app that calculates the carbon emissions produced by your car and plants trees to offset that carbon footprint
Partage.com - Eco-friendly marketplace that connects sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly brands with people who love them
These are just a few examples of the many applications and platforms available to help people live more sustainably and reduce their environmental impact. As technology continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more and more apps that are designed to help individuals and communities live in a way that is kinder to our planet.
In conclusion, technology is shaping the future of sustainability in both positive and negative ways. It's up to us, both as individuals and as a society, to invest in clean technologies and implement solutions such as the circular economy and energy-efficient systems to ensure that technology is used for the betterment of our planet and society. By making responsible choices now and supporting companies that are making a positive impact, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
