While it is not easy to define what makes some people more effective and successful than others, there are a few habits that are common among successful entrepreneurs, high-level athletes, and other high-performing individuals.
Have you ever heard of the book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” written by Stephan Covey? If your answer is “No”, bear with me and take 3 minutes to read this article, this may change your life.
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Be Proactive is all about taking control of your life and not blaming external factors for your behaviour.
Proactive people know that they have the power to choose their responses to stimuli and take responsibility for their language and actions. They focus their energy on their Circle of Influence, which includes things they can control such as their health and work problems. So they don't find excuses to eat junk food or not go to the gym.
On the other hand, reactive people focus on the Circle of Concern, which includes things beyond their control like the weather or national debt. Becoming aware of where we direct our energy is an important step towards becoming proactive.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
Begin With the End in Mind, is about using your imagination to create a mental image of what you want to achieve in life. It's about understanding that everything has two creations: first in your mind, and then in reality.
By not consciously visualising your goals, you risk letting external forces shape your life instead of taking control yourself.
To apply this habit to your life, it's important to create a Personal Mission Statement. This statement outlines who you want to be and what you want to achieve, and serves as a guide to keep you on track towards your goals. By creating and following your own personal mission statement, you become the leader of your own life and take control of your destiny.
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Put First Things First is the practical application of Habits 1 and 2, and it focuses on time and life management. By exercising your independent will, you can become principle-centred and prioritise the things that are most important to you.
This habit is about organising and managing your time and events based on the personal priorities you established in Habit 2. In short, Habit 3 is about putting first things first and living a purposeful life.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Habit 4 is about the principle of Win-Win, which is based on the idea of cooperation, not competition. Unlike the zero-sum game mentality, Win-Win creates a situation where everyone can benefit from interactions.
This approach requires empathy and confidence, as well as consideration and bravery. This balance is crucial for success and maturity.
Win-Win solutions are those that are mutually beneficial and satisfactory to all parties involved.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
The most important skill in life is communication, but many people don't have the training and the will to truly listen and understand others.
Often, people are too focused on getting their point across instead of understanding the other person. They filter everything they hear through their own experiences and decide what the other person means before they finish communicating.
However, it's important to note that autobiographical responses may be appropriate in certain situations. It's important to learn how to listen with the intent to understand, not just reply.
“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.” - Tony Robbins
Habit 6: Synergize
1+1 = 3 - Synergy means that working together produces better results than working alone. It is a process that involves teamwork, open-mindedness, and finding new solutions to problems. When people interact genuinely and are open to each other's influence, they gain new insight and can invent new approaches.
Synergy values differences and sees them as strengths, not weaknesses. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
By valuing differences, synergy adds excitement to life and helps people achieve more together than they could individually.
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
The habit of "Sharpen the Saw" is about taking care of yourself in four areas of your life:
Physical
Social/emotional
Mental
Spiritual
By renewing yourself in each of these areas, you can create growth and change in your life, and increase your capacity to handle challenges. Without this renewal, you can become weak, mechanical, raw, insensitive, and selfish.
The habit reminds us to take care of ourselves and not neglect our well-being, and seize the opportunity for daily renewal.
In conclusion, the 7 habits of highly effective people are not just a set of behaviours, but a way of life.
By incorporating these habits into our daily routines and cultivating a growth mindset, we can become our most effective selves and achieve our goals with greater ease and fulfilment.
I hope this article has provided some additional insights and inspiration for your personal growth journey.
Keep learning and growing! 💪
Have a nice week!
